I bought a fancy pocket knife.
It has several blades that I might want to use to cut food.
Should it be toveled Immersing Utensils?
- If onetovels the pocket knife with the blades still folded inside the holder, the holder will
block the water from reaching the blade & the tevila will be invalid. - The blades must be opened & fully extended for the tevila.
- Although, in a previous Halacha we noted that a utensil need not be disassembled before
tevila, this does not mean it can remain folded. - The utensil must be toveled in the position it would be in when it is used.
- Since in this case, the blades are extended when cutting, it must be toveled in this manner.
- If all the blades can be opened at once & they will not rub against each other, then the
knife can be toveled one time in this position.
- If the blades will lean against each other & block the water from touching all sides of the
knife, then the blades should be opened one at a time and the knife toveledwith each
blade opened separately.
