Guests think that tour operators are making a profit on the
25% taxes & tips
TRUTH
The reality is that the tour operators pay out more than 25% in taxes & tips.
- The 25% figure comes from years ago, when the wait staff was paid 18% tips.
- Most hotels now require 22% - 24% just for the wait staff.
- In addition to the wait staff tour operators have to tip the Food & Beverage Managers, Kitchen Staff, Bellmen & Housekeepers
- There are also taxes to pay on the rooms that usually includes
state tax, city tax & hotel tax.
So tour operators are losing money by only charging you 25% taxes & tips.

They're just trying to add to their tips which are guaranteed by the contract.

- We're grateful that you have a day camp for our kids.
- The counselors are doing such a great job.
- We're so grateful you're keeping our kids busy so we can relax.
- Don't worry, we'll send you a check for the counselor tips when we get home.
TRUTH
Counselors work for tips & babysitting monies.
- On many programs parents ignore the request for tips
- If parents don't tip before they leave they rarely send them in later
This makes it difficult to hire good counselors

I have to have a babysitter every night & I'll pay whatever it costs
TRUTH
- The majority of guests pay the babysitters less per hour than they'd make at home.
- Usually If the sitter works 3 3/4 hours, they'll just pay for 3 hours.
- Some say they'll need them for 3 - 4 hours & come back after 30 minutes or an hour & they'll
just pay for that period of time even though they've lost the opportunity to babysit for anyone else that evening. - It is rare for a guest to give a tip in addition to the agreed upon hourly rate.
